Default 'Dear John' Knocks 'Avatar' Out Of Top Spot

Could a chick flick bump Avatar off its box office top spot??

If Friday's numbers are any reflection of the days to come, YES!

Dear John, starring Amanda Seyfried and Channing Tatum opened to an impressive $13.8 million on Friday night, while Avatar only earned a little over $6 million!

Seems like the seven-week #1 streak is coming to a close!

I suspect Avatar might start losing numbers at some point, but Cameron is going to be laughing all the way to the bank

<sarcasm> It's a sad state of affairs when a James Cameron movie can't even hold onto the #1 spot for a mere two months!

ROFL

It'll be interesting to see how things pan out for it at the Oscars

I really enjoyed Avatar, but there's no way it deserves Best Picture. That script was pretty bad.

The original script had a lot more bite, though I suspect it wouldn't have been as "family friendly"

I was actually thinking more of the dialogue than the plot - the plot is derivative of other stories, yes, but at least it's fun. The dialogue though... ouch. All I have to say is one word: "unobtanium".

Fair point

I guess I was enjoying the visuals and audio more than the actual dialogue

The problem with a LOT of "big" films is that the dialogue is often quite poor

Well, I think the problem with dialogue in SOME "big" films is either you have too much interference from the studio, trying to change things repeatedly and bringing in lots of different writers for continual re-writes - or, you have a case like Avatar, where the director is given too much of a free rein to just "do his thing", and you DON'T get another writer to come in and try to clean stuff up in the script.

Occassionally you'll get a "big" film where a solid writer or two is working in tandem with a good director, without each stepping on the other's toes too much and without too much studio interference, and the result can be fantastic.
